Testosterone

  • Started taking Testosterone at 18 years old.
  • I take testosteroneto enable me to appear externally to be more closely who I believe I am internally.
  • The end result of taking testosterone for me is to outwardly appear to be the man I am.

Habits & Health

  • Do smoke
  • Rarely drink (0-1 drinks per week)
  • Participate in regular vigorous exercise (i.e., work or recreation 4x/week for 30 minutes)
  • Use drugs socially and regularly smoke marijuana

Mental Health

  • I have Asperger's Syndrome, and some problems with my appetite
  • Yes, I have noticed some changes in your mental health prior to taking testosterone compared to after taking it. Asperger's is essentially 'social dyslexia', I've noticed that my increased confidence (which I attribute to being a by-product of T) has changed the ways in which I am comfortable interacting with people. Post-T, I've had a number of people tell me after they discover my Asperger's, that they really couldn't tell.

Life prior to Treatment

Life before transition - Scared, lonely, insecure. Very unsure of myself and my place in the world.

My identity prior to transition - Mostly dyke. For a time I tried very hard to be a femme lesbian, though it really didn't work too well. I think it was partly a result of denial.

The most common emotion for me was Frustration.

I'd thought about suicide, but never very seriously. My dad has cancer, and we had enough drugs of various sorts in the house to kill several horses. I used to occasionally think about all those drugs, but never got to the point of actually opening the cabinet.

Treatment & Effects

What medical process/hormone regime

I saw a counsellor to sort out my reservations about T before I started. I'm on what is often considered a 'low dose' - 100mg/fortnight of Sustanon, however my testosterone levels are actually marginally higher than they ideally should be on that dose. A 'normal' dosage would leave me with stupidly high testosterone levels.

What changes occured that you wanted?

  • My clit grew enormously in the first two months,
  • my voice started dropping by about month 4
  • and currently, after about 16 months, I'm finally getting some decent face-fluff.
  • I've also noticed recently that all my pants keep falling off because the fat has started moving off my bum. I'm starting to get a much more male shaped body.
  • And how can I forget my legs turning into tree stumps from the muscle bulk combined with cycling.

What changes occured that you didn't want?

My liver hasn't been working quite up to scratch, though my GP says that's more the amount of guarana I drink than the testosterone.

Did testosterone or transition change your sexuality (who you are attracted to)?

Yes. Well, kind of. I was attracted to women pre-T. Now I'm primarily attracted to women.

Attitudes of HealthCare Providers

Positive aspects of healthcare provider treatment

My GP sat down with me and explained over a few visits what the risks and benefits of T were before I started. He made sure that I was well aware of what I was doing before he prescribed it for me. He also treated me as a man and didn't question my identity, he was quite happy to take the advice of my counsellor that I identify as male.

Negative aspects of healthcare provider treatment

He's been great. I don't really have any complaints about his treatment of me. The only minor issue I have is the distance I travel to see him, but that really can't be helped.

Transition Itself

Transition is all about being true to myself. It's about shouting from the rooftops, "This is who I am and I'm not going to let anyone tell me otherwise anymore".
