Short term solution? – Implanon
While you’re waiting to start testosterone, Implanon might be a useful solution to stop the menstrual cycle. This has the benefit to get some breathing space from this regular issue for many men and give you a greater sense of comfort in the short term.
What is Implanon?
Implanon is a small implant (the size of a matchstick) which provides a slow release of progesterone. The effects of Implanon can last up to three years unless it is removed.
How is it administered?
Implanon is inserted by your medical doctor just under the skin using a local injection.
Are there any side-effects?
One of the advantages of Implanon, is your monthly cycle may stop completely. When Implanon is removed, the cycle will return to normal.
There are some potential side-effects with Implanon. Please discuss these with your GP.
NOTE: Implanon does not protect you from STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections). If you’re having sex, remember to continue your use of safe-sex practices, to protect you from STIs.
Can anyone use Implanon?
If you want to stop your period, you can talk to your GP about Implanon until you start testosterone treatment. Your GP will ask you if you’ve had any of these health problems:
- a history of breast cancer;
- a history of bleeding disorders.
You should also tell your GP if you could be pregnant or you’ve had any unusual or irregular bleeding.
