Medicare cover for surgeries

ALL surgical procedures covered by Medicare have an item number.

If you are listed ‘Female’ with Medicare, the item number for chest reconstructive surgery is usually put through as a mastectomy. Your surgeon should be aware the actual surgery in practice is more than a simple removal of the breast tissue, as this would have a concave effect on your chest. This procedure should be carried out along with chest reconstructive procedures.

Most men require a revision of their chest surgery at a later date. If you are listed ‘Male’ with Medicare by this stage, there is an item number your surgeon can use to cover surgery for males who have gynaecomastia (breast growth).

Hysterectomy is claimable for men who are listed ‘Female’ with Medicare. This surgery procedure is fully covered by Medicare.

FTM Australia is currently unaware of any genital reconstructive surgery being covered by Medicare.
