for Subcutaneous implant 100 mg and Subcutaneous implant 200 mg

Description

These small implants are two sizes. The 100 mg implant is 6mm in length while the 200 mg implant is 12mm in length. These implants contain only testosterone and no other ingredients and only work if they are implanted under your skin (sub-cutaneous). Manufactured by Schering-Plough.

Availability

  • A doctor’s prescription is required to obtain this medication.
  • Available on Authority Prescription to legal males on the Australian Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS).

General Information

  • The implants are small ‘pellets’. Most men will need three or four 200mg pellets implanted each time.
  • Testosterone implants are inserted under the skin into the lower abdominal wall or buttock by a doctor experienced in this procedure. Local anaesthetic is applied and a small cut is made in the skin before the implant is inserted and the wound is dressed afterwards. The implant usually lasts between 4 and 6 months. The doctor will perform periodic blood tests to make sure that the implants are working correctly and not having adverse effects.
  • The usual starting dose is 150milligrams to 450milligrams (2 to 6 pellets) implanted by your doctor every 3 to 6 months.
  • About 10% of the pellets will work their way to the surface of the skin and are eventually pushed out. Contact your doctor if you notice any of the pellets coming out, or if you have an infection with redness, swelling, or pus.
  • Implants are one way to begin treatment slowly.
