Australian Tax Office

When you have your name change certificate, (from your local Births, Deaths and Marriages Registry) you can correct your name at the Australian Tax Office.

At this point, most men request their sex marker F be changed to M. The ATO can do this on request without requiring any extra documentation.

If you go into your Australian Tax Office in person, it is recommended to wait a short time (usually less than a year) until your physical appearance has masculinised somewhat. If you do this by phone, it can be better to wait until your voice breaks into the male register before asking for the sex marker on the ATO record to show male.

Your tax file number will stay the same.
