Psychiatrist Dr Russell Reid will appear
before the General Medical Council after complaints by
other experts over the treatment of 12 patients. One
patient, Charles Kane, 46, had his surgery to become a
woman reversed.
He claims Dr Reid, 62,
referred him for the op when he had only lived as a
female for a month - the usual guidelines, although not
binding, are for a year. Businessman Mr Kane, of
Newcastle, said: "It was intolerable. I had to go through
several operations to try to repair the damage."
He is suing Dr Reid - an
authority on Gender Identity Disorder, who has appeared
on various TV shows - for £186,000 damages in a
civil action.
Three senior consultants
from London's Charing Cross gender identity clinic have
complained to the GMC. They said two of Dr Reid's
patients allege their treatment was "unnecessary".
Several other experts are
backing Dr Reid, of the London Institute in Earls Court.
He refused to comment at his home in Kew, West London,
yesterday.
