Nigeria to consult FIFA rules on footballer
14 Febuary 2005

Lagos, Nigeria —The Nigeria Football Association (NFA) said it would need to consult the statutes of world soccer governing body FIFA before determining the fate of a player who recently had a sex change in the US, the local press reported Monday.

Iyabo Abade, a 19-year-old former player of the national female team, the Falcons, had a successful sex change surgery in California in January.

The confirmed Hermaphrodite, who has now changed his name to James Johnson in line with his new status, said after the surgery he would like to play in the national league, as well as for the national men`s team.

NFA chairman Ibrahim Galadima said no decision could be taken until the association had found out what the FIFA rule book says about the issue.
