will try to amend ACT laws to clearly define sexual
relationships to counter discrimination.
Democrats ACT MLA Roslyn
Dundas said she would try to change legislation to
reflect reality and embrace the diversity of the gay,
lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex
communities.
An intersex person was
born with reproductive organs, neither exclusively male
or female, she said.
A transgender person
identified as a person of a different sex to the one to
which they were born.
"It is important
that we work to remove discrimination against the
queer community, that the legislation does truly
reflect the diversity that does exist," Ms Dundas said
in a statement.
The ACT Government wants
to adopt a new term domestic partnerships
under the law.
But Ms Dundas said she
would move amendments to include a definition of
intersex.
"There are a
number of indicators that can show two people are
domestic partners besides cohabitation," she
said.
This included the length
of the relationship, whether it had been sexual, the
degree of financial commitment, domestic chores and
degree of mutual commitment to a shared life, she
said.
