Preamble

FTM Australia maintains a primary focus upon the issue of adequate health provision for all men, irrespective of age, stage of treatment (transition) or diagnosis of transsexualism.

This health policy refers to -

  • Men who have had sex affirmation treatment;
  • Men who due to age or through financial, health or other hardship are in need of sex affirmation treatment but have been unable to undergo this rehabilitation treatment;
  • Minors affected by transsexualism;
  • People contemplating 'transition' or sex affirmation treatment;
  • The families, loved ones and supporters affected by the experience of men living with transsexualism; and
  • Service providers offering support and care to men affected by transsexualism.

FTM Australia Position

In regards to men affected by transsexualism, it is FTMA's health policy that -

Medical treatment of men affected by the predicament of transsexualism be publicly funded through Medicare as for any other critical life-threatening condition;

All rehabilitative treatment is covered, including endocrinological treatment for secondary sexual characteristics, psychological care, and all reconstructive and plastic surgery.

Treatment for this condition be provided without a diagnosis of mental illness or mental disorder

This condition be recognised for what it is, a natural variation in human sexual formation for which the man requires sex affirmation treatment in order to resolve the conflicting physical sexual differentiation of the mind with the balance of the physical body.

In regards to systemic care for men affected by transsexualism -

State hospital based centers of Excellence be established in respect of the medical condition of transsexualism and other conditions of variation in human sexual formation and that such centers act to improve the education of medical practitioners and government concerning the health care needs of all people living with transsexualism and their families;

Government funded and supported education programs be established and conducted in schools and university throughout Australia to demystify and explain the predicament of transsexualism with the goal of minimizing the destructive effects of prejudice, ignorance and shame in respect of this aspect of human diversity;

This predicament of transsexualism and other intersexual conditions be removed from the American Psychiatric Association Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders;

The establishment of partnerships with Government and private health care providers to ensure the special and critical health needs of all men and women affected by transsexualism, their families and loved ones are met in a skilled and timely manner, irrespective of age, financial status and stage of sex affirmation treatment.

That all men and women living with transsexualism, including children and adolescents, be entitled to receive quality medical treatment and care for the condition with a diagnosis of mental illness or disorder;

That transsexualism be recognised for what it is - a self-diagnosed natural variation of human sexual formation in which the individual requires sex-affirmation treatment to unify the internal conflicting differentiation of the mind with the balance of the individual's body;

The establishment of ongoing dialogue and partnerships with government and private health providers to ensure that the special and critical health and welfare needs of men and women with transsexualism, their families and friends are met in skilled and timely fashion - irrespective of age, financial circumstances and stage of sex-affirmation.
