In
regards to men affected by transsexualism, it is
FTMA's health policy that -
Medical
treatment of men affected by the predicament of
transsexualism be publicly funded through
Medicare as for any other critical
life-threatening condition;
All
rehabilitative treatment is covered, including
endocrinological treatment for secondary sexual
characteristics, psychological care, and all
reconstructive and plastic surgery.
Treatment for
this condition be provided without a diagnosis
of mental illness or mental disorder
This condition
be recognised for what it is, a natural
variation in human sexual formation for which
the man requires sex affirmation treatment in
order to resolve the conflicting physical sexual
differentiation of the mind with the balance of
the physical body.
In regards to
systemic care for men affected by transsexualism
-
State hospital
based centers of Excellence be established in
respect of the medical condition of
transsexualism and other conditions of variation
in human sexual formation and that such centers
act to improve the education of medical
practitioners and government concerning the
health care needs of all people living with
transsexualism and their families;
Government
funded and supported education programs be
established and conducted in schools and
university throughout Australia to demystify and
explain the predicament of transsexualism with
the goal of minimizing the destructive effects
of prejudice, ignorance and shame in respect of
this aspect of human diversity;
This predicament
of transsexualism and other intersexual
conditions be removed from the American
Psychiatric Association Diagnostic and
Statistical Manual of Mental
Disorders;
The
establishment of partnerships with Government
and private health care providers to ensure the
special and critical health needs of all men and
women affected by transsexualism, their families
and loved ones are met in a skilled and timely
manner, irrespective of age, financial status
and stage of sex affirmation treatment.
That all men and
women living with transsexualism, including
children and adolescents, be entitled to receive
quality medical treatment and care for the
condition with a diagnosis of mental illness or
disorder;
That
transsexualism be recognised for what it is - a
self-diagnosed natural variation of human sexual
formation in which the individual requires
sex-affirmation treatment to unify the internal
conflicting differentiation of the mind with the
balance of the individual's body;
The
establishment of ongoing dialogue and
partnerships with government and private health
providers to ensure that the special and
critical health and welfare needs of men and
women with transsexualism, their families and
friends are met in skilled and timely fashion -
irrespective of age, financial circumstances and
stage of sex-affirmation.
