1. What is FTMA and how long has it been around?

A group of men with transsexualism and their families first established FTM Australia (FTMA) in 2001 based on first-hand experience of how difficult it can be to find up-to-date information about their condition.

Over the next four years, the community in Australia saw an increase of a range of community groups mobilising their own contact and support networks. In late 2005, FTM Australia began using the name Men's TS Resources in Australia (MTRA), to distinguish from another group who began using a similar name. In 2007, the network resumed use of the name FTM Australia.

FTM Australia is a network of people pre- and post-transition, their partners, families and friends.

Learn more about our history.

2. What do you do?

FTM Australia offers an email discussion group 'OzGuys' linking many across Australia and New Zealand who share similar experiences, a newsletter (TORQUE) four times a year, a resource listing on a state/territory basis and this regularly updated website.

In these ways we strive to offer accurate, relevant and timely information about transsexualism as it relates to the experience of all men with transsexualism (identified female at birth) and their families. We aim to inform the public of the issues our men face.

FTM Australia also carries out research to inform ourselves and our health practitioners as well as society about our needs and experiences through regular projects.

20013. Who's behind this network?

Craig coordinates the network with the input of members. He carries out all the work behind the scenes, this website and newsletter. He is a quietly spoken prolific writer, skilled editor, webmanager, networker, lobbyist and advocate.

Craig remains the driving force behind the network. He is assisted by members and guided by a range of health and legal specialists some of whom are listed on our Advisory Panel.

3. Where does your money come from?

At present, we receive no funding other than that provided by members to maintain resources, website and postage services.

All donations are reported in regular and Annual Reports. Please show your support by making a donation to the network.

4. Where are you based?

At present, we are based in Sydney, NSW - however we are without office space. You are welcome to make an appointment with Craig to meet in a cafe or at his workplace in Glebe.

5. Why do you only work with men (identified female at birth)?

The needs and experiences of men and women are distinctly different. We are the only agency in Australia providing resources specifically to this group of men, their families and service providers throughout Australia and New Zealand.

There is a network which specifically focuses on women (identified male at birth) called the Australian WOMAN Network (AWN)
<http://www.w-o-m-a-n.net/> based in Victoria.

The experience of people who identify as belonging to a third gender or no gender is beyond our scope of focus or this website, even though we have members from this identity grouping.

We look forward to the day when health care and support services can respond well to the needs of all men and their families, regardless of the man's apparent 'birth sex' based on a glance at the genitalia at birth.
