After five years of generous
support, the Men's
Health Information Resource
Centre (NSW), have
advised us they can no longer support the postage
of our newsletter and mail-outs. There's been a
great response from members making donations and
also support to bring back a subscription fee to
cover your postage.
I have suggested a yearly
subscription of $5. Alex (WA) has asked for regular
reports of the financial situation for network -
which I'm willing to provide him. Finances aren't
my strong point and I'm pleased Alex has been so
proactive.
Over on page 15 are the
different ways you can pay your subscription. If
you use a cheque, or postal order - please include
green strip of paper from this mail-out. If you use
paypal or direct deposit, please make sure to
include your contact ph # so I can contact you if I
need to.
If you want to make an extra
donation to meet other costs like webhosting,
assorted mail-outs, paper, postage and publication
costs, donations of $50 and over will be mentioned
by first name and region in the Annual Reports at
the end of the year. If you can't afford a
subscription, other ways to support the network are
on page 15.
We last did a community
profile in 2004 and it's time to do another one.
The survey included in this mail-out can be folded
after completing it and posted back. Responding to
this survey will provide an outline of numbers,
where we're approx. situated and includes a
question about ethnicity.
There's a new form of
testosterone available now called Reandron. If
you're in Sydney in early November, check the
website <www.ftmaustralia.org> for the
details of an information session we'll be running.
I intend to get this session recorded to offer this
information further afield. There's also some basic
information about Reandron on our website at
<http://www.ftmaustralia.org/treatment/testosterone/products/reandron.html>
or by following the links through Information,
Treatment, and Products.
Cartoonist Tapu (SA) offers
an experience on the next page, I'm sure many of
you can relate to. Alex
(WA) offers his 'snapshot on page
5. Thanks to Sandy
(Far WestNSW) we have a book review about
Dhillon
Khosla's 'Both Sides Now' on page 10 along with an
except from the book.
A short personal experience of surgery
is on page 12 by
'Rick' (QLD). Matthew (SA) writes about
testosterone titled 'How
T-Shots work' on page 7.
If you have more questions or comments, Matthew is
willing to do what he can to respond. David (NSW)
offers his perspective on disclosure
and how he handles this aspect of his
life on page 13. From
page 14 onwards is the usual updated listings of
the network email discussion groups; some of our
network partners; and Community Noticeboard on the
back page.
I'm hoping our newsletter
will become more interactive and a resource you can
keep for later years to look back and find answers
or write in looking for answers. A common question
asked many, many times over the years is 'how do I
get the ball rolling' with medical treatment. I've
given a fairly lengthy response starting on page 3.
Without doubt, your response would be different and
I encourage you to send in your responses to this
very common query. Perhaps you have another
question about treatment or transitioning (before,
during, after) that's not addressed in this
edition. There'll be another newsletter like this
in December so make a plan to send those queries or
thoughts in by the end of November.
A new resource is out now,
'Transitioning
on the Job', is a
53-page book written specifically for Australians
and includes a number of personal experiences from
men who have transitioned in their workplace. It
answers a number of questions you and your employer
might have about the process and offers some
strategies to manage the process simply. Again you
can purchase this from us directly for $20AUD
(postage included).
If you prefer to access this
resource online - it's also on our website -
following the links through Publications -
Resources - 'Transitioning on the Job' or here
http://www.ftmaustralia.org/publications/employment/
In other Network news, we're
getting between two and three new members a month;
there's approximately a query every second day
(called 'occasion of service') not including
follow-ups, emails with quick queries, return
support needs or the chat sessions; our bank
account stands at $ $632.49 with thanks to Aaron
(QLD), Alex (WA), Julie (VIC), Michael
Mitchell(VIC) and Sam (NT); and we have a growing
interrelated networking of support and contact
between people throughout NZ and Australia.
In closing, thanks to the
first-class team of contributors to this edition.
Your input has made this edition entertaining and
informative.
