The Western
Australia Gender Reassignment Act 2000
establishes the Gender
Reassignment Board of Western Australia.
The Gender Reassignment Board enables people who
have undergone a gender reassignment procedure
to be legally recognised.
Anyone who has undergone a reassignment
procedure, and met all of the criteria under the
Act 2000, can apply for a recognition
certificate. This certificate officially
recognises a person's legal sex - which means
they can then apply for a new birth
certificate.
Once the person has received their
recognition certificate, they must wait a
calendar month before applying for a new birth
certificate. The Registrar General for Births
Deaths and Marriages must register the person's
legal sex. A new birth certificate showing the
individual's legal sex in accordance with the
altered register can then be issued.
